Benches

Through its Seating program, DOT installs backed and backless benches at bus stops and in commercial areas to support transit use and to encourage walking. DOT installs two types of benches; both are designed to enhance usability for older adults and people with ambulatory disabilities.

Description

  • Backed: 7 feet-6 inches length by 20.5 inches width by 1 foot-6 inches height (seat) / 2 feet-10.375 inches height (back)
  • Backless: 7 feet-6 inches length by 20.5 inches width by 1 foot-6 inches height (seat) / 1 foot-10.625 inches height (handle)
  • A matte black finish is DOT's new standard finish. Review Resiliency and Maintenance. Variations in color and finish may be considered, but require PDC approval and a maintenance agreement with DOT

Siting

  • Locations that meet DOT’s strategic objectives — e.g., at bus stops without shelters and Access-A-Ride designated stops, subway stations, areas near senior centers, along commercial corridors, and in close proximity to cultural institutions and municipal facilities
  • Benches adjacent and parallel to the building shall be installed no more than 12 inches from the building face
  • Benches adjacent to and parallel to the curb must be placed 36 inches from the curb
  • Minimum clear path: 8 feet

 

Installation

  • Through the Seating Program, DOT personnel install and maintain benches; DOT may also work with third parties to install and maintain
  • Benches must be installed on concrete; if distinctive paving materials are present, a concrete foundation can be utilized with appropriate detailing
